The roof with a but in it

Ask around about a skylight and you will hear the same sentence sooner or later: that roof isn't suitable. Sometimes it is true. Often it means the roof isn't the quick job. There is a purlin across the slope, the pitch is shallow, the flat roof holds a puddle after rain, the panels already sit on the south side.

Fox Skylights exists for that roof. We install and replace skylights and rooflights for householders in Leicester and in every town up to 30 road miles away, and the awkward feature is the part we want to see first. It decides the product, the size and where the opening goes. Treat it as a footnote and the job goes wrong on the day the tiles come off.

Our working line is short: we find the way in. Sometimes that means a different product, sometimes a different slope, sometimes a sun tunnel where no rooflight can reach. And sometimes the way in does not exist, which you hear from us plainly, before anything is cut or ordered.

We look at the hard bit first

A survey with us begins at the problem, not at the brochure. We check the pitch against what each product is made for. We go into the loft to see whether the slope is carried on cut rafters, a purlin or factory trusses, because each one is opened up in a different way. On a flat roof we look at which way the water actually runs, which is not always the way it was meant to.

None of this waits until fitting day. If something about your roof changes the plan, it is found at the survey and written down. Our awkward roofs page takes the usual obstacles one by one, with the route round each.

The straight answer, in writing

After the survey, which costs you nothing, you get a fixed quote on paper. It says which skylight or rooflight we propose, its size, where the opening sits on the roof and how the room is finished inside. It also records what we found up there and what we will do about it, so you can see why the price is what it is.

A fixed price means the figure you sign is the figure you pay for the work described. If the honest answer is that your roof should not take a light where you hoped, the written reply says that instead, along with any alternative worth considering. Being told no early is cheaper than being told yes wrongly.

Signed off properly

Cutting a hole in a roof touches the structure and the insulated shell of the house, so the work is built to current Building Regulations. Where a job is notifiable, we take care of telling Building Control, through either the council or a registered building control approver. You are not left to chase the paperwork.

Every installation we carry out comes with a 10-year workmanship guarantee on the fitting itself, and the product keeps its maker's warranty alongside. The terms are set out on our guarantee page.

Who we work for

Homes come first: terraces with a dark middle room, semis with a new kitchen extension, lofts on their way to becoming bedrooms, and older rooflights that have misted, yellowed or stopped closing. Small commercial jobs are welcome too, such as a shop storeroom or an office over a showroom.

The rooflight is the whole job for us, from the opening in the roof to the plastered reveal in the room. If your roof has a feature that has put other people off, send us a photo on WhatsApp or ask for a survey.
